    - International Falls - Aug. 29, 2012
  3. National By-Laws require that, "the Post Commander or his representative attend all properly called District Conventions or meetings" (VFW National By-Laws Sec. 218). In the VFW, we enjoy a representative form of government where we elect representatives to do our bidding at successfully higher levels. Your Post Commander is your primary representative to the District and, with others, decides the business of the District. He/She is one vote for your Post. Any accompanying delegates also each have a vote. So the more representatives you send to District Meetings, the more votes your Post has to wield and the more say you have in District affairs. If you don't send anybody, others are making decisions for you. A word to the wise.
  4. Posts are reminded to submit required reports as soon as possible so the District can achieve 100%. These reports include Post Audit Report, Community Service Report and Poppy Report.
  5. Posts are reminded that the following contributions are due in Department Headquarters: Dept. Hospital Recreation Fund $50.00, Camper Fund $10.00 and, if you have a club or Gambling, the Club Permit is $60.00.
  6. Congratulations to all who have been elected, or accepted an appointment, to a District or Post position. That you've been selected indicates that others have faith in you to do what needs to be done. Take the time to learn the responsibilities of your position and resolve to carry them out to the best of your abilities. There are comrades counting on you. For both elected and appointed Officers, this information is available in the VFW National By-Laws, Manual of Procedure, Section 218 (for Posts) and Section 418 (for Districts). For Committee Chairmen, you can contact your respective District or Department Chairman who will be very happy to help you understand your job.
  7. Posts are reminded to send donations for Vets on the Lake to the District Quartermaster so they can be used for the District Cabin #27. Gambling Donations should be sent to Vets on the Lake marked for Cabin #27.
  8. The Department web site is loaded with information (Department and District Conference/ Convention Dates, State Contest Deadlines, VFW Veterans Activity Events, VFW Youth Activity Events, National VFW Events, etc.) You can also download the Commander's and Quartermaster's Manuals, both of which provide you with what you need to perform your job efficiently. Not only should all Commanders and Quartermasters download and read these manuals cover-to cover, all the other Officers should do so as well. Visit the Dept. of MN web site for more at  http://www.vfw.state.mn.us/
  9. Check out our District 8 web site http://www.vfw3979.org/MNVFWD8/default.aspx. Rich Chasse is doing a terrific job and it, too, is loaded with information.
  10. Inspections are being scheduled and Chief Inspector Richard (Oz) Leciejewski and his Deputy Inspectors will start making their rounds. Your annual inspection is serious business and more critical than ever before. The Inspectors are charged with a difficult task, have a lot of miles to cover and their time is valuable. They deserve your respect and cooperation. What they do is for your benefit more than anybody else's. The Department web site also contains the Trustees' Informational Sheet and the Department Club Rules. Each of your Trustees should have a copy of it, study it and strive to perform their function accordingly. If your Post has a Club, your Club Manager needs to have a copy of the Department's Club Rules, be familiar with them and must adhere to them.
  11. Communicating is a key factor in the success of any organization. To help improve communication within our District, please provide me with at least one e-mail address for your Post. This should be someone who is willing to pass on information at your monthly meeting.
  12. 2012-2013 Contest Themes:
    - VOICE OF DEMOCRACY - "Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?"
    - PATRIOTS PEN - "What would I tell American's Founding Fathers?"
Deadline for both to Local Posts: November 1, 2012
  13. District assessments are now due. They are 25 cents for District and 10 centsHospital based on last years Post membership. The District QM will be sending out a letter with all the info in it.
  14. Commander Bob's project for this year is an awning for the Silver Bay Veterans Home. More info to come at District Meeting.

  5. The department website offers a multitude of information and materials for your officers ad committee chairmen along with other information (Monthly GO / Commander and Quartermaster Manuals / Buddy Poppy forms and info / Community Service (incl. excel fill-in form) / Membership / Inspections / Club rules / Public Relations Guide / Safety / Youth Activities / VOD/PP and the Dept. Calendar of Events.) Check it out at http://www.vfw.state.mn.us/ (Copy and paste to your browser address bar).

  7. Inspections are well under way. If you've already been inspected, you know that a great deal more information must be provided to the inspector. If you've yet to be inspected, do take the time to use the check-off list you are sent so that you'll have all the materials and copies that are required on hand. If you don't, you'll have to find a way to provide them while the inspector is there, you'll be making his job much harder than it already is, and you'll force him to spend much more time than he can afford on your inspection.
  8. If you do not send a representative to District and Department meetings you will miss out on valuable information and the fellowship of other veterans who have had like experiences. You will also deprive your members a say in the workings and decisions of the District and Department. National By-Laws require that, "...the Post Commander or his representative attend all properly called District Conventions or meetings..." [VFW National By-Laws Sec. 218].
