With Christmas right around the corner and then a new year upon us, let's not forget about those who are unable to be home to celebrate the holidays with us. And let's thank and say a prayer for our Veterans who are currently serving and for those who have served, for because of their sacrifices, we are able to enjoy these holidays today. May you have the gladness of Christmas which is hope; the spirit of Christmas which is peace; and the heart of Christmas which is love.

Hope everyone had a chance to share their Thanksgiving day with family and friends. There is a lot to be thankful for, especially if you were able to spend Thanksgiving with family and friends. If it were not for the brave men and women serving our country today and those who served before them, our day for giving thanks would probably be much different. Don't forget about the Kids Christmas party coming up on the 16th, there are different activities planned this year so come down to see what's happening.

There is still a lot going on at the Post with an outstanding turnout for the Kids Halloween party. The Post was packed and a lot of kids dressed up in Halloween costumes had a great time and did not go home empty handed, some needed extra hands to carry all their stuff home. We also had an excellent Marine Corps Birthday Ball where a lot of local Marines shared camaraderie, celebration and birthday cake. There was a lot of support from local businesses who donated presents and gifts for this special occasion. Coming up is the annual Kids Christmas party on December 16th from 1 - 4. We always have a great turnout for that too. There is a bit of disturbing news for those who were looking forward to the Lutefisk or meatball dinner scheduled for November 17th, it was re-scheduled for December 1st instead. Oh the wait, can we make it? Don't forget to lend a hand if you can or just come down to the Post to show your support. Hope everyone had a great Veterans Day and thanked Veterans for their service to our country and give special thanks to all our service men and women serving in harms way on Thanksgiving Day.

Did you know that if you had active duty service in the military (including active duty for training), anytime between 1957 and 2001, you may qualify for a higher social security payment. The amounts received depend on timeframe constraints and/or length of service criteria. This benefit is not automatic, you have to ask for it! Read more about from the SSA website and contact your Social Security Office and have your DD-214 with you. If you know someone that would qualify for this, please let them know.

Don't forget about the 8th District meeting going on this weekend right here in Cloquet. Due to another previously scheduled event at the Post, the Saturday Officers meeting and meal are going at the Northeastern, but the District meeting is still going at the Post on Sunday. Come to the meeting to show support and find out what's going on in your district.
As you can probably tell by now, autumn is here and so are the weekly activities going on at the Post. Come on down and partake in the festivities and if so inclined (and greatly appreciated) pitch in and lend a helping hand. Your support is greatly welcomed.

We had another great Department Fall Conference this past weekend with a lot of training classes given. This was the first set of instructions given by some of the new Department Chairmen (and Chairwomen) so it was very interesting.
Closer to home, the Steak / Fish Fry has been cancelled for this coming Friday, however, we will still be having information available for the POW/MIA Recognition Day. This Friday is National POW/MIA Recognition Day to honor and remember our Americans who are still Missing In Action or continue to be held as Prisoners Of War. Not only Veterans are being held as POW's, so are American Civilians. If you think it's tough having a loved one go on deployment for a year or two with a date they are returning home, think about those who are held as a Prisoner in some foreign land, not knowing if they will be coming home at all. And think about their family anxiously awaiting any word about if they will ever see their loved one again. Both are being tortured with the unknown future that awaits them. On Friday, as with every day, let us not forget the sacrifices our fellow Americans are still enduring along with their families. Say a prayer for them and a prayer for their safe return.

Another great kickoff to the Walleye/Steak Fry season with the first one being held last Friday. It was such a great turnout that we ran out of walleye and steak. An apology goes out to those who came late. And the Auxiliary did an outstanding job on their Country Store raising money for Cancer Aid Research. If your know of someone who has or has had cancer, you know what a great importance this project is. You don't have to wait for a fundraiser event to donate money for this program, donations are always accepted for cancer research, just contact any of the Auxiliary Officers. Thank you for your donation.

We had a great 8th District meeting this past weekend in International Falls. It was a beautiful drive up there and back and everyone had a great time. And as stated before, there was a lot of good information passed at the meetings.
There will be a Veterans Memorial Dedication going in Virginia this weekend (8/25/12), starting with a parade at 10:00 starting at the east end of Chestnut Street and ending at the Memorial.
There's also a MACV Stand Down on Friday (8/24/12) at the Depot in Duluth from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. This is a good opportunity to catch up on some of the services provided to Veterans and to connect Veterans to housing, benefits, employers, medical and legal assistance.
Come to the next meeting to find out why the 8th District is called the "8 Balls". It's a good thing.

I've finally updated the "About Us" page to reflect some of our history as Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979. You'll know who our Post was named after, when we received our Charter and who the founding Charter Members were and more. There is more history being researched so stay tuned for more information to come.
Don't forget about our upcoming 8th District meeting on August 18 - 19 in International Falls. It may be a long drive but the information gained is worth it. If you would like to go, see if you can carpool with someone, enjoy the scenery and camaraderie on the way up.
Closer to home, we have the Auxiliary Steak/Fish Fry and Country Store on August 31st. That's the official kick off of the Steak/Fish Fry season so if you've been yearning for those mouth watering large walleye fillets or juicy tender steak, you'll soon be feeding that craving. It also means that Autumn isn't far and soon the kids will off to school which will give you more time to meet with old friends and do a little volunteering. We can always use a helping hand in giving a helping hand to Veterans in need.

There have been a few changes at the Post Home since our new Commander has taken over. All members and guests are required to sign in the guest log when visiting the Post. The guest log is located at the bar now so you have a better opportunity to sign in. There will also be a guest sign in sheet at the pay station during scheduled events/meals. All officers of the Post will be required to wear a button down shirt during Post meetings. If you are a Committee Chairman or have to give a report during a meeting, a report will have to be given, a "No Report" will not be acceptable. There will also be some visual changes done as well so some re-decorating will be taking place. Soon (if not all ready), we will be advertising on the big screens at the Premiere Theater in Cloquet, let us know what you think of the ad. We will be getting a Credit Card machine to allow for more options to pay for your beverages. "Change can be good, only time will tell, if you don't come to a meeting, then you can't give him hell". There will probably be more changes in the future so come down to the Post and get involved.

Like the saying goes "If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen". Well, as you will tell when you look at this month's events, there isn't much going on from the kitchen, and with the heat we're having, it's understandable. Hopefully you are able to beat the heat and stay cool.
In a couple days will be Independence Day, it was on this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, setting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. For your enjoyment, here are some fun facts about the 4th of July from Military.com, USA.gov and Wikipedia.org. As interesting as these fun facts may be, let us not forget those Veterans who made it all possible and who continue to protect and serve so we can enjoy the celebration of our independence.

Well it appears that there wasn't enough interest in having an All Services Ball this month due to the lack of reservations received. We are going to try again for sometime in January and hope for a better turnout.

Do you have your tickets for the upcoming All Services Ball yet? Time is running out, get your tickets today!

Today is Memorial Day. A day to remember and pay respects to the those Veterans who have gone before us. This weekend, as we were putting Memorial Flags at the graves of Veterans at the local cemeteries, there were a lot of volunteers that showed up to help. Some of the volunteers weren't old enough to have served their country in the military but you could tell they were proud to be honoring those Veterans that have. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped. And even though the weather wasn't the greatest today, there were a lot of people who attended the military honors by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard at all the cemeteries where honors were held. When it comes to honoring our fallen comrades, the Honor Guard is always there to render proper respects, regardless of the weather or conditions.
There are a lot of Deals and Benefits for Veterans now-a-days that I just have to share some with you, so I've created a "Deals for Veterans" segment below the Featured Links (on the left) so you can check them out. If you know of any useful information to offer Veterans, let me know.
Were you aware that unemployed veterans between the ages of 35 and 60 can now apply for the new Veteran Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), which allows qualifying veterans to receive up to 12 months of assistance equal to the full-time Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty rate of $1,473 per month. For more information, visit VA's VOW to Hire Heroes Act 2011 webpage. They have a "High Demand Occupation" list with a lot of career options to choose from.

Well the flyer just came out for the 1st Annual All Services Ball on June 16th. We'll see you there.

May 14, 2012
Memorial Day is coming up soon. The Memorial Day Services (on May 28th) will begin at Veterans Memorial Park at 11:30 a.m. after the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard returns from honoring Veterans at the local cemeteries. See the Memorial Day page for more information.
Don't forget about the All Services Ball coming up June 16th, flyers should be out this week which gives you the breakdown of the who, what, where, when, why and how much .

We had a great 8th District Loyalty Days meeting this past weekend in Gilbert, with a Testimonial dinner, a Banquet, an Auction, and a Veterans Memorial Service. There was even a film on Saturday regarding the effects of PTSD from a mother who lost her son due to PTSD, very sad, very tragic. "Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health problem that can occur after someone goes through a traumatic event like war, assault, or disaster." PTSD has effected many lives throughout many generations of Veterans and their families. If you know someone who may be suffering from PTSD, find out how you can get them the help they need and help save a life.

April 23, 2012
The time has come again for the last District meeting under the current 8th District Commander Jonathan Clinton. It has been a great year and after this coming weekend, we will find out who will be our next 8th District Commander and Line Officers. This is the meeting to go to if you have any preferences on who the new leaders will be. The District meeting will be going at VFW Post 4456 in Gilbert, with activities starting on Friday and ending on Sunday. Check out the General Orders for times and events.
Come to our next VFW meeting coming up on May 10th and congratulate our new incoming Post Officers. They won't actually take command until after the June Convention (June 20-24) but they have been elected. We will have some new faces sitting at the head table so come to the meeting to see who they are. We'll see you there.

There were more links than would fit in the Featured Links box so I added these great links to the Links page. There are some great programs offered by Military Warriors Support Foundation such as mortgage-free homes awarded to wounded heroes injured during combat. Or partnership programs with top named companies interested in hiring veterans, just to name a couple at this site. Check out all the benefits that Minnesota has to offer at Minnesota State Veteran's Benefit. Or check out the Warrior Care Blog for different articles on veteran's issues. I hope you find these sites useful.

Since this is tax season, which can be a financial upheaval for some, I thought I'd throw in some financial links under the Featured Links section, (8 Things Debt Collectors Won't Tell You, and 4 Tips to Spring Clean Your Credit) just incase you need them. If nothing else they are a good read. You'll also notice a link for a new Enhanced Combat Helmet. If it can help reduce the number of TBI's our Veterans are getting, then that's a good thing.

"Lets Climb Those Steps and Have Our Voices Heard" is this years theme for Legislative Day at the MN State Capitol building. There will be a bus leaving the parking lot behind the Super One Store in Cloquet on March 20, 2012 at 0545. The cost is only $15.00 per person. You couldn't drive down there and park all day for that price. Contact the Auxiliary President - Alma Ojala for reservations (218-879-4432). With this being an election year and talks of budget cuts for Veterans on the table, now is the time to make your presence known. Put on your Veteran cap and let's fill that bus and let those at the State Capitol know that our Veteran's rights should not be threatened or reduced. "Lets Climb Those Steps and Have Our Voices Heard"

We are now on facebook. Our Adjutant (Carl) created a nice facebook page for you to share your thoughts and comments, or ask questions. There is a date set for the All Services Ball - Saturday, June 16, 2012. A Saturday is a good day to have a ball, most have the weekend off from work, so you'll have all day to prepare for an evening of fun and camaraderie, and you have the next day to relax. More details to come as we get closer to the date.

What a winter (or lack of) we are having. This time of year we should be shoveling ourselves out of a few feet of snow (it may still happen), but instead there is hardly any snow on the ground at all. What a dilemma, not enough snow to shovel, not enough snow for some winter sports, and a lot of time on your hands. What's a person supposed to do with all that time? Volunteer, that's what! There are plenty of things to do to help Veterans and the Community. Contact your Commander and/or Auxiliary President and offer your assistance. You don't necessarily have to spend time at the Post to volunteer, check out the Community Service page to see all the things you can do to help your fellow Veteran and/or Community - You'll be glad you did. You are probably all ready doing them and didn't know it.

February 10, 2012
It's time to go into your storage closet and pull out your military uniform, we are having a Military Ball. A committee is in the works and planning for our first Military Ball. From what they've done so far, it sounds like it will be a great time for meeting up with your friends and comrades. If your uniform doesn't fit, that's ok, come anyway, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. As soon as the date is solid, I'll let you know. Speaking of great times, don't forget about the Valentines dinner coming up on the 14th. It's just another way to show your sweetheart how much they mean to you and that you care. Have a great time.

We had a good time at this year's Mid-Winter Conference in Minneapolis. This is the conference where the VFW honors the Teacher of the Year, Patriots Pen winner and Voice of Democracy winners. There are some very talented and patriotic students out there. There was also a Buddy Poppy display contest in which our very own Susan won 2nd place in the Category II display. Great job everyone!! Congratulations to all our winners.
I've updated the Featured Links on the left with some sites I hope you will find useful and interesting. I've also updated a few sites on the Links Directory, for instance, do you know who is eligible to receive a Burial Flag? Do you know who can get a Presidential Memorial Certificate, you'll be surprised who is eligible. Are you a Family Caregiver of a Veteran? You don't have to do it alone, see how the VA can help you.

Happy New Year!! A little late but it took a little time to re-design all the pages to this website. Hopefully it will be a lot better for you to get around and easier to update. There are more changes in store, mostly cosmetic and functional but all the pages are useable. If you'd like to see something different or have any comments on the design, let me know.
