December 16, 2014
We had an awesome time at the Annual Kids Christmas Party held at the Cloquet Armory this past Sunday. There was lots of room for the kids to unwind and have a good time with their friends, make crafts, decorate cookies, win prizes and even get a visit from Santa. This year we topped 100 kids and there was room for lots more.
The next party that will be hard to top is the upcoming New Years Eve party at the Post. Reserve your seats now for your Prime Rib or Chicken Dinner followed by dancing and singing to your favorite songs. Come join in the fun!
Again we are sponsoring the Cloquet Lumberjacks Bantam AA Hockey team and they are really having an impressive 14 win - 3 loss season so far. Read more on the Items of Interest page.

I hope everyone had a great time with their Thanksgiving feast, whether you were able to provide for a family or veteran in need or you received help from a charitable organization, such as the VFW. This is the time of year that we have a lot to be thankful for, so Thank you.
Don't forget about the Kids Christmas Party coming up on December 14th at the National Guard Armory from 1 to 4 pm. There will be lots of games, prizes and fun for the kids, so come and have a good time. See you there.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we have a lot to be thankful for. Everyone has their own special something to be thankful for but I'm sure we are all thankful for the sacrifices our Veterans have given to ensure we can live the life we choose and have the freedom to do so. That's what makes this country so great. And I want to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for partnering with the Veterans Service Office to put on the Meal for Veterans & Families in Need this Thanksgiving. Because of your generosity and selflessness, there will be at least 10 local families that will be able to have a good Thanksgiving dinner this year.
The Holiday Showcase was a huge success. The hall was lined on both sides with different kinds of vendors. There were even vendors on the stage and down the middle of the hall. There are a lot of talented and resourceful people out there and they know how to make some really nice stuff. Come down and let management know what you thought of the event and if you'd like to have another Holiday Showcase.

Thank you to everyone that participated in the fundraiser for the Northland Honor Flight and those that stayed for the Comedy/Magic Show. Those that left early missed a really good show.
Speaking of shows, you won't have to go far to do your holiday shopping this year as we are having a Holiday Showcase at our Post on November 15th. Come down and see the huge selection of area crafts, foods and holiday ideas.
The Kids Halloween Party went very well at the Armory. The kids had a blast playing games, winning prizes and even climbed a Rock Wall that went all the way up to the ceiling. That will be tough to beat but we do have a Kids Christmas Party coming up on December 15th at the Armory see we'll have to see what they have in store.
For those of you who like lutefisk, we are having a lutefisk dinner on November 14th and again on December 19th so come hungry. There will also be meatballs as an alternative.
We are also having a Veterans Day meal on Veterans Day at the Post to honor our Veterans so come down to have a great meal (Free for Veterans) and enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship.

There has been a lot happening at the Post and still a lot more to come. We finally have the new flat screen TV's in place and they couldn't have been placed at a better time with football Sunday's in full swing. How nice it is to watch the game with such clarity and sound. Drinks and prizes are also given away, you can't beat that.
The Dart and Pool leagues are also in full swing and soon the Poker league will be starting. Come down and enjoy the fun!
Our VFW Auxiliary is partnering with the Carlton County Veterans Service Office (CVSO) to provide holiday meals for Veterans and their families in need. This is a worthy cause to help families in need during times that are supposed to be festive. Our Veterans have given a lot to ensure our safety and freedom, it's time to do our part to help them in their time of need. Donations and Volunteers will be needed, read this flyer to see how you can help.
The 239th Marine Corps Birthday is coming up and we are having a Marine Corps Ball on November 8th at our Post. If you are a Marine of know one, you are welcome to join in the celebration and camaraderie.
Don't forget about the comedy/magic show coming up on October 25th at our Post. This is also in conjunction with a fundraiser for the Northland Honor Flight so come on down, have a good time, enjoy a great meal and support a good cause. It's also the weekend of our 8th District meeting so stop in and meet up with some old friends or make new ones. See you there.

September 4, 2014
We are back in full swing at the Post this month with the Steak/Fish Fry next Friday, Sept 12th and Burger Nights on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays. And we're starting something new this month as well, we will be open on Sundays for the football games. There are also quite a few leagues starting up too, like the Pool Leagues, Dart Leagues and now even a Poker League. Come on down to the Post and join in on all the excitement.
Guess who is turning 100 years old? The Ladies Auxiliary is. On September 12th, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars will celebrate their 100th Anniversary serving Veterans and the community. And what a great job they've done! Congratulations and Happy Anniversary.
And the VFW is also celebrating an Anniversary this month. On September 29th, the Veterans of Foreign Wars is celebrating 115 years of service to Veterans. We've come a long way and have accomplished a lot with our programs and benefits but there is still a long way to go before the battle is over. Our membership is dwindling and as our numbers fall, politicians see that as an opportunity to take away some of those benefits we've earned. We need our membership to keep going up so that our voice is not lost on the hill. Renew your membership now and recruit new members before it's too late.

There hasn't been much going on at the Post during the summer, but things are starting to pick up now. The kickoff of the Annual Steak/Fish Fry will be starting next week (Friday Aug 15th) along with the Auxiliary's Country Store to raise money for Cancer Awareness (a very awesome and worthy project). We also have Build Your Own Burger Nights starting up the following week on Thursday, so come down and build that burger just the way you like it for only $4.00.

It's actually starting to feel like summer and some are all ready complaining about the heat, I say "Bring it on". The sun brings life and thoughts of brighter times ahead. Time to do away with the doom and gloom of winter and enjoy life, enjoy the sun and celebrate new beginnings. We all just shared in the 4th of July celebration, a celebration of a new beginning for our nation 238 years ago and still going strong. It was a beautiful day (except for the downpour of rain at mid-day) but the rest of the day was fine. There were a lot of activities going on at Veterans Park after the parade. Our Bingo under the Tent and our Beer Tent were a huge success. We were even on the evening news (channel 10/13). We look forward to the opportunity to do it again next year. With all the celebrating going, where ever you were, I hope you had time to reflect on how we are able to celebrate our freedom, and had the opportunity to thank a Veteran for ensuring our freedoms are not taken for granted and for helping to keep America free.

June 18, 2014
It seems like forever since I've updated this site and for that I apologize. I have been busy with a lot of personal projects of my own since winter is finally over (for now). We recently attended the MN State Convention in St Cloud and the new State Commander is Gary Anderson from the 7th District. The attendance from the 8th District was pretty scarce and due to different reasons a lot of posts were not able to vote, but that's a topic for the new 8th District Commander (Darrel Lindgren) to discuss.
We were awaiting the results of the publication contest to be announced, especially the website award, however, it appears the publication contest judge was also busy with his own projects and didn't turn in the results on time and no winners were announced. The winners will be announced at the Fall Conference.
One of the highest awards received by our Post was given to Alma Ojala for Auxiliary President of the Year. Congratulations Alma on a great and successful year as Auxiliary President. Alma is very appreciative of the award and thanks all of you for your support and help.
Another award we heard that we received, but haven't yet, is a national award for membership. We haven't received it yet because a member from our Post has to go to the National Convention in St Louis to personally accept the award. As of yet, we are not sure who that will be. There is also a cash prize for going to the National Convention as well. The convention goes from July 19 to July 23 in St Louis MO.

May 20, 2014
Things are winding down at the Post, with the ending of the steak/walleye meals, we had our smelt fry, burger nights will be ending soon, but that doesn't mean you have to stop coming to the Post. There will still be things to do until Fall when thing pick back up again. Keep an eye on the calendar of events to see what pops up.
Next week is Memorial Day and the Honor Guard will going to the cemeteries to render honors to our fallen comrades, then going to Veterans Park for the Memorial Day Ceremony. The route and times should be posted in the paper so you'll know what times to be at the cemetery of your choice. Say a prayer for our fallen Veterans and never forget the price that was paid for your freedom.
Don't forget about the MN Department Convention coming up June 4 - 8 in St Cloud.

May 1, 2014
Yeah, we are finally having our All You Can Eat Smelt Fry!! Set your calendar for Friday, May 16th from 4:00 - 7:00. Don't wait too long to get there, some of us really like those smelt.
Don't forget about the Loyalty Day conference going at the Carlton VFW this weekend (May 2 - 4). We hope to see a lot of local attendance since it is so close. For more information, check out the 8th District website General Orders.

This years Patriots Pen winner Madelynn Dostal comes to us from the Cloquet Middle School. Madelynn was sponsored by our Post and Auxiliary and her essay took 1st place among several entries. Congratulations to Madelynn for a job well done!
If you've been down to the Post Home recently, you probably noticed a few cosmetic changes, such as new carpeting on the stage and display room and new tile behind the bar. But the biggest change that is noticeable is that the smoke exchangers have been removed (those big square boxes that used to hang from the ceiling). It seems to make the Post look more open and clear. There are more changes coming, so next time you're in the Post, see if you can spot something different.

It's that time of year again, the time when most members fret, the time when attendance at meetings become scarce, yup that's right, it's nominations time again. We had our first round of nominations at the last meeting and all the elected positions have been filled. Even the appointed positions have names entered on the roster. I can't say how the Ladies Auxiliary faired but I'm sure they have it under control as well. So now it's okay to come down to the next meeting. You know, it's pretty sad to say that because the Veterans of Foreign Wars (and its Auxiliaries) does a lot to help Veterans and ensure our Veterans, past, present and future, are properly cared for. If you think about all the freedoms, privileges and benefits we have today, if it weren't for the Veterans who fought on foreign soil, things that some have given their life for, and those that continue to serve and protect our nation from our enemies, foreign and domestic, we wouldn't have the freedom today to say so. Think about the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars who continue to fight Politicians who aren't as appreciative of our Veterans and want to take away what was promised us. We don't need fewer members at meetings, we need more, we need more willing to stand up and carry on the tradition set forth by our predecessors. You should be proud to be a member of The Finest Veterans Service Organization on Planet Earth and to stand in the ranks of those that make a difference for Veterans!
That being said, I've added some new links to the Links Directory for those that want to stay abreast of the laws trying to be passed that impact Veterans lives and our families. Sites like Congress.gov which replaces the 20 year old Thomas.gov site, and Legislative Reports from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs to find out who authored those Bills and what current actions are being taken, and GovTack.us to keep track of your representatives in Congress to see their voting record and more. And since I mentioned earlier about the benefits Veterans and Veterans families have, check out the Federal Benefits for Veterans, Dependents and Survivors to see what you may be entitled to.

March 4, 2014
I've heard that spring is around the corner, but this record breaking winter isn't quite over yet. According to the groundhog (on Groundhog Day), there is still a couple weeks left. But not to fret, the activities are picking up at the Post and there is always room for another friendly face. So if the winter blues are getting you down, come on down to the Post and enjoy a good time with your friends and fellow Veterans.

And the cold keeps coming! Being that we're all from Minnesota, we should be used to the cold weather by now, but incase there is something you may not know, here are a few links to help you out. Minnesota Department of Health, Pet Care from the ASPCA, Cold Weather Rule (Customer Rights and Responsibilities), and Survival Guide to stay safe in the frigid cold. As cold as it has been, there are still Veterans out there that are homeless and families that could use assistance. If you have the means to help a homeless Veterans, please do so. Some of those Veterans have put their life on the line to protect you and your freedom, it's time to show your appreciation.

Don't forget about the Mid-Winter Conference going on this weekend in Minneapolis, it's a time to learn new things about the VFW and meet fellow comrades from different parts of the state. If you want to find out first hand what's happening in the state and national level, it is worth the trip to go. And if you want to be up to date on what's happening in charitable gambling, then be there on Friday by 2:30 to attend the gambling seminar and gambling can pay for some of your expenses to going there.
Talking about meetings, we have the 8th District meeting coming up on February 15th and 16th here in Cloquet. We're having the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen banquet on Saturday at the Cloquet Armory. Even Congressman Nolan is supposed to be there for the banquet. We hope to see a lot of members there as well.

January 08, 2014
With a new year comes change, change in the year (obvious), change in healthcare, change in tax laws, change in military retirement pay , but what changes will be happening at our Post? You tell me. What changes would you like to see? If you haven't all ready done so, come by the Post and look around, talk with your fellow veterans and guests, and ask yourself, "What changes can be made to improve our VFW?" "Should it remain as things are?" Send me an email and let me know what you think.
Don't forget about the 8th District meeting coming to our Post on February 15/16, there is even a possibility that Congressman Nolan may make a showing. Let's make sure we have a lot of our members attending this district meeting to show support for your Commander and your Post. The details of the activities planned are still in the works so stay tuned for more information.
There is also a Department Midwinter Conference this month (January 24/25) at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center for all Minnesota VFW members, Ladies Auxiliary and Men's Auxiliary. See you at the Midwinter Conference. Read more about all the committee meetings and workshops covering the many VFW programs and activities.
