Just a quick note to wish every one a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This is a joyous time of year for families and freinds to get together and celebrate the holidays. But let's not forget about those that are not here to celebrate with family and friends due to being on active duty protecting our country. Think of them in your prayers and think about their family being just as lonely without them. And if you know of someone that is homeless, please lend them a hand so they can enjoy the season as well.

You may have noticed that there have been a few more dances going on at the Post. Other than the normal Wednesday Senior Dances, live bands have been playing on weekends as well. And there are even more scheduled in the future. This is due to Lil and Carl setting up the band schedule and contacting local bands to come play at our Post. They have been very busy and have been doing a great job. We have picked up a few new members, both on the VFW side and Auxiliary side, and having new members is a good thing. I've been told we are getting dancers from all over and everyone has a good time. Check out the calendar of events to see which bands are coming up. Make sure to let Lil and Carl know there are appreciated to doing such a great job.
Don't forget about the kids Christmas party coming up this weekend at the Armory from 1:00 - 4:00. All kids are welcome and there's even room for the parents to hang out. There are lots of activities to keep the kids busy and they can even win prizes and get a free meal. In fact, the event is free so come on down and have a good time. See you there!

Last weekend we had the Marine Corps Birthday Ball at our Post. The weather was great the whole day and we had a great turn out. Marines come from a long way to come to our Birthday Ball. Besides having Senator Lourey as our Guest of Honor, we also had Rich Dumancus as our Guest Speaker. Rich is the Regional Representative for the Department of Veterans Affairs and covers all the states surrounding Minnesota. He is only 2 people away from the VA Secretary in Washington D.C. Although he lives in Minnesota, he reports directly to the VA in D.C. His mission is to have us fix the VA. We know what issues we have and how things could run better in the VA, he is here to help. If you have any issues with the VA, you have an opportunity, an obligation, to make things right so you can possibly help other Veterans with the same issues. You may never get another chance.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things turn out with a new President. Hopefully you were able to get out and vote and let your voice be heard.
The kids halloween party went very well. There were a lot of kids that attended and everyone had a good time. There are some pretty neat costumes out there. Our next kids event will be the kids Christmas party which is usually held around the 3rd Sunday in December and again it will go at the National Guard Armory. More details will be given when the event date gets closer.
Our next Veteran event is coming up in a couple days, Veterans Day. We will serve a free meal to all Veterans from 4:00 - 7:00 at the Post. Veterans Day is a day to honor all Veterans, past and present, currently active or prior active. And let's not forget about the families of those Veterans who are with out their loved ones due to deployment, duty assignment or have not come home yet. Families are important to honor too, so don't forget to thank a Veteran and/or the family of a Veteran.

Come one, Come all to the Annual Kids Halloween Party at the National Guard Armory on Sunday October 23rd from 1:00 to 4:00! We used to hold this event at our Post but we always received such a turnout that it was hard to move around and there was less room for the kids to enjoy themselves. Now that we are able to have the event at the Armory, there is plenty of room for everyone and the kids have a great time. There are a lot of activities planned, prizes to give out and the kids even get something to eat (besides candy). There is even food and coffee for the adults. And, what makes it even better, it's free.

The Past Commanders / Past Presidents Banquet went very well. We had good attendance and good camaraderie. It was nice to listen to some of the stories of how things used to be run. Some aren't as able to get around like they used to but they still made it to the banquet. We had a special guest join us to offer some insight on suicide awareness. Mike Waldron from 23rd Veteran shared his experiences and solutions for Veterans who are contemplating suicide. 23rd Veteran is derived from the national average that 22 Veterans comit suicide every day and the 23rd Veteran is the one that compemplated it but chose not to. The goal is to not have any suicides and what we can do to help prevent them. It was very interesting.

Invitations have been sent out to the Past Commanders and Past Presidents for the Past Commander / Past President Banquet coming up on Thursday September 15th. However, this event is not only reserved for the Past Commanders and Past Presidents, any member of the VFW or Auxiliary is also invited to attend. The purpose of the banquet is to honor those leaders who have done their job to preserve and defend the honor and integrity of the VFW and our Post. Let me tell you from experience, being a Commander has its challenges but it also has many rewards. As a member, you are invited to this banquet to show your appreciation for your Commander and/or President. Social starts at 5:00.
Also coming up is the Country Store and BBQ Rib dinner on Friday September 23rd from 4:00 - 7:00. This is put on by the Auxiliary as their fundraiser for their many special projects and also for their cancer relief fund. Our Auxiliary is a very crucial part of our VFW. Without their hard work and dedication, our Post would not be as active and productive as it is. Thank you very much for everything you do for our Veterans and community.

The 8th District meeting was very well attended by almost all the Posts in the District. This was my first meeting as the District Commander and I think everything worked out well. A lot of information was passed and there are a couple positions still open. If you are interested in being the 8th District Chaplain or District Inspector, let me know.
For those who may have forgotten or did not know, the VFW Auxiliary (previously known as Ladies Auxiliary) is accepting men to join the Auxiliary. The criteria is the same as before for eligibility such as if you are a Husband/Wife, Widower/Widow, Father/Mother, Grandfathers/Grandmothers, Sons/Daughters, Grandsons/Granddaughters, or Brothers/Sisters of persons who were or are eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. If you are interesting in joining, please stop by the Post and fill out an application. If you would like more information, you can ask any Auxiliary member or go to the VFW Auxiliary website.

The Duluth Air Show was a huge success. Not only did we get to serve some of the crews that put on the death defying air show, we also served the board of directors and all the security staff, but we got to see the air show for free. If we get a chance to volunteer again next year, I'm pretty sure my name will be on that list. This was also a fundraiser for our post and the DAV.
Closer to home, we have also been working with the City of Cloquet and the designers for the artwork that will be going on the wall that will be built in Veterans Park. The design is coming right along and we hope to finalize it soon. Our Commander and Quartermaster have been instrumental in making sure the artwork is authentic and depicts the correct era's and theme that you have said you wanted on this wall. There will be further meetings you, the city and designers before it's all done, so if there is anything you would like to add or voice your opinion on, let us know.

We had a very good turn out for Bingo under the Tent at Veterans Park yesterday. The whole day was nice, starting off with a grand parade down main street, all the activities for the kids at the park, the bands playing all day, the movie in the park and of course the fireworks. It turned out to be a nice day for everything.
Last month we had the State Convention in Rochester. That's where the new officers get installed, a few seminars are given and awarded are handed out. This year, I was a little upset because there were no awards given for publications, except for one. No best website award this year for anyone. The only award given for best publications was to one person who wrote a story and put it in his newsletter. This is the first year someone has received an award for writing a story. Very upsetting for those who work hard to write their newsletters and keep up with their websites.
On a positive note, the poppy display for our Post took 2nd place in the state poppy display competition. 1st and 2nd place winners from state get to go to the national poppy display competition. Our display is on suicide awareness and prevention. This is the first time I've heard of a poppy display from our Post making it to nationals. Congratulations and good luck.

Yeah, we finally have electronic pull tabs and bingo at the Post. So far we have had a good response from those that have come down to play, come down and give it a try, I'm sure you'll like it. Don't forget about the bands we have playing on June 17th and 18th, both indoors and out in the parking lot. I heard there were bands coming all the way up here from the cities to play for free. And it's free for all our members and guests. Check out (print) the flyer and tell your friends. See you there!

The turnout at Loyalty Days in Pengilly this past weekend wasn't too bad. We could always use a better turn out. On a good note, I was elected as your new 8th District Commander for the 2016-2017 year. I don't officially take over until after the June Convention. I am looking forward to an eventful year, however, I hope it doesn't get too busy where I won't have time to update this website. It may give me more things to keep you informed about though. We'll just have to see.
With the business at the Post slowing down during the summer, there may be some changes to the decor of the Post being made. If there is anything you would like to see changed, please let the officers know so we can incorporate those changes. There has already been one change done and that was to move the sewing groups things from the display room to the storage room under the BINGO display. New cabinets were purchased and new shelving installed. The room will still be used to store the extra tables and chairs, but it will be easier for the sewing group to access their things and will be more organized. They do a lot for our Veterans and if this will make it easier for them, then that's great. This will also open the display room for better things.
Don't forget to come to the next Post meeting (Thursday May 12th) for the Joint Memorial Service and to install and congratulate the new Officers and show them your support. See you there.!

Spring is in the air (or is it)? With the changing of the weather comes changes at the Post. In the spring we elect new officers to lead us into the new VFW year, the events at the Post start to dwindle down and the hours of operation are changing as well. Some new officers have been elected and appointed at the last members meeting (Post and Auxiliary) so come down to the meeting on May 12th to welcome in the new officers and show them your support. I know they will appreciate it. It looks like Burger Night on the first and third Thursdays will be ending this Thursday and the Steak/Walleye Dinners have ended as well. Now we have to wait until Fall to enjoy those tasty meals. And the hours of operation for the club have changed to opening every day at 2:00 (no more 11:00 on Sunday) and closing time is now midnight every day except Friday and Saturday when stay open until 1:00 a.m. Don't forget about Loyalty Days coming up at the end of the month. This year it will be held in Pengilly. Hope to see you there.

April 03, 2016
It's that time of year again when we are privileged to elect new leadership for our VFW Post and District. We've already had a round of nominations for the Post Officers. Make sure to come down to the next meeting on the 14th to vote for the officers you want elected. Then at the end of the month is Loyalty Days in Pengilly. Hope to see you there to cast your vote on the leadership you want at the District level. Thanks to those who are currently serving our great country and those who have served previously, we have that right to vote for and elect the leaders we want to represent us, whether it be locally or nationally. As long as we live in the land of the free and the home of the brave, we will have that right. See you there.

Last Wednesday, there was a spaghetti dinner/fundraiser at the Post sponsored by 23rd Veteran. Every day 22 veterans commit suicide, the 23rd veteran, who almost did, decided not to. One of founders of this organization, Mike Waldron, was almost there, but decided not to commit suicide. His powerful story is inspiring. He co-founded this organization to help those veterans who are contemplating their life and will do what he can to help them return to the path of hope and happiness. For more information and to see how you can help someone in need, visit www.23rdveteran.org and maybe you can help save your loved one from committing suicide.

A couple reminders about the 8th District meeting going this weekend in Gilbert. There will be Kathy Randall's Testimonial dinner on Friday Night and the District meetings on Saturday. It would be nice to see more of our members there to show support for the 8th District. If you like good music, be at the Post on Friday (2/26/16) for Rage N Country. This band is great and totally supports our Post. Come on down to dance to great music and support your Post as well. A win-win for everyone. If you're into getting your fortune told or connecting to a past loved one, then come on down on Saturday (2/27/16) to see Brenda Hammon, the Physic.

The Mid-Winter Conference went very well. I went to the gambling seminar they had and learned quite a bit, actually. Come by and ask me.
Our Post finally did it, our Poppy display took 2nd place in the Poppy competition and will be moving on to the National competition at the National Convention this summer. This isn't the only time we've taken an award for our Poppy display at a Department Convention but this is the first time at the Mid-Winter Conference. This is only one where 1st and 2nd go on to the next level. Congratulations on a great job!

January 11, 2016
The meeting time for our Post and Auxiliary meeting has changed from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and there will no longer be a fellowship meal before the meeting. It will still be on the 2nd Thursday of the month so the day has not changed. So we'll see you earlier at the Post for the meeting. That means we should get out sooner.
Don't forget, Mid-Winter Conference is coming up January 22 - 24 at the Marriott in Minneapolis for those that want to attend. I'll be going. Will you?
