Congratulations to our Post for all the awards received at the State Convention in Maple Grove. It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice but it was worth it. Once again our Post website took 1st Place as the Best Veteran Service website in the State of Minnesota. This is the 8th honor in the 1st Place position (and once at 2nd Place) for our website. Thank you for all the contributions and comments that helped mold our website to this place of honor.
A ton of congratulation goes out to our Auxiliary as well. This is the first year (that I can remember) that a Buddy Poppy display took 1st Place in the Buddy Poppy contest at the State level and will be going to the VFW National Convention to be judged against all the other displays at the National level. WOW! Great job!! Our Auxiliary also brought home numerous other awards to include being the Auxiliary of the Year for District 8. What a great honor. It is well deserved. Keep up the great work.

The dedication of the Veterans Memorial Wall on Memorial Day was a huge success. There was a great turnout and a great ceremony. They did an awesome job on the wall, which was in the planning stages for years. We had many meetings with the city for the design of Veterans Park and with the designers of the wall. Images were exchanged and approved by members of all our Veterans organizations, which also includes our Native American Veterans. The results of all our hard work and planning are displayed in granite. There was media coverage from several local TV and newspapers. If you missed the dedication, here is a link to the dedication, provided by our local Pine Journal.

The Annual School Patrol Pizza Party was a huge success again this year. This is the first year I've participated in this event without Velda Beck reading the meaning of the Flag Folding. RIP Velda, we miss you. However, Linda Erickson did a great job of filling in for Velda. We also teach the children about the POW/MIA table and Buddy Poppy. They seem to enjoy themselves and leave with a Certificate of Appreciation, a flag, poppies and some patriotic literature.
And speaking of Poppies, the 26th is our Poppy Day. It is the day when our volunteers go to the local businesses and distribute poppies to the community. Donations given for the poppies goes in our Relief Fund to help Veterans in need. That is the only expense we can use this money for. We are always in need of volunteers to help distribute the poppies, so if you can spare an hour or two (or more) it is greatly appreciated, and Thank you.
Memorial Day is coming up on the 29th. We normally put out around 1000 flags on the graves of Veterans in the local cemeteries. Then on Memorial Day, the Combined Honor Guard goes to 9 cemeteries to pay respects to our fallen comrades. We end the services at Veterans Park where we have the flag raising ceremony and the final salute. This year's ceremony will be special with the dedication of the Veterans Memorial Wall. The Wall depicts almost every conflict since the Spanish American War, or since the City of Cloquet has been in existance. We will also have a Pipe Blessing and Drum Ceremony by the Fond du lac Honor Guard. If you haven't been to Veterans Park to see the Wall, make sure you go there on Memorial Day to learn about it's history and meaning.

Loyalty Days has come and gone and it was a great weekend. The Commander/Presidents Testimonial banquet was awesome, a lot of friends and family attended along with a few guest of honor. The first guest we honored was Tony Jurek for his sacrifices as a POW in the Korean War. Tony was honored with a Quilt of Valor handed down from the District Commander and President to the Post Commander and President then wrapped around Tony to symbolize comforting him. The Quilt was registered with the National Quilt of Valor Foundation. Thanks to Carl Schenk for being a member of the Quilt of Valor Foundation and for enlightening us about the Quilts of Valor for us to honor Tony. It is our intention to honor other deserving Veterans in the District.

It's getting to be that time of year again for membership push. If you know you haven't paid your membership dues yet this year (or last or longer), please pay them now. If you know a Veteran who is eligible for the VFW, please get them enrolled. Membership is very important in several ways, it shows your support for your Post and District, it shows support for the VFW, your voice gets heard in issues that affect Veterans, and you stay informed on issues and events that are happening at your Post. I say "your Post" because without membership there would be no Post. If we have no Post, we have no Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has been working hard on their membership and have reached their goal of being 100%. Congratulations!!

As you can tell by all the events listed on the calendar, we have had a lot going on at the Post and there are a lot more to come. We will even be starting up Burger Nights again (with the help of the Eagles). We can always use more volunteers to help out at the Post or even from home. Every one can contribute in one way or another. Just let us know you are interested in helping and we can put your talents to good use. Any help, in any capacity, ultimately goes to helping a Veteran in need. I'll bet you're all ready doing things to help out and you don't even realize it. Check out our Community Service page to see how you can help your neighbor or the community and reporting to let others know you care.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about the bands that have been playing at the Post. We are getting more people coming out to dance and not all of them are local. Lil and Carl have been doing a great job of contacting and managing the bands and keeping track of everything. The consistency of when the bands play lets people know how to plan their weekends. If you haven't been down for a dance recently, come on down and have a great time. Check out the calendar of event to know when the next band is playing.

For those who haven't noticed the decorated red wagon on the table by the gambling office, the Auxiliary is having another "Wagon of Cheer" fundraiser. The wagon is getting filled with all different types of "cheer" and party favors to raise money for veterans. The drawing will be held on St Patrick's day March 17th following their corned beef and cabbage dinner. Last year they had a wheelbarrow filled with cheer, this year they have a wagon. Either way, you have a chance to win the wagon and everything in it, but first you must buy a ticket. They have tickets at the Post or you ask one of the Auxiliary members. Good luck.

Congratulations on our Post's VFW Auxiliary accepting two new male Auxiliary members, Dan Forgorty and Andy Angell. I don't know which was actually the first one but hopefully there will be more to follow. They also welcome three new lady Auxiliary members as well, Becky Newton, Darla Kocian and Denise Swanstrom. Way to go Auxiliary!! The Auxiliary is close to being 100% in membership which is awesome. Keep up the good work.
